his
Web site explores many of the dimensions of stuttering and its effect on the human identity,
as well as the development of stuttering behavior. It also includes an
exploration of the "veils" (self images, projections, and lack of
awareness) that must be worked through during therapy or
self-therapy to begin and continue the process of stuttering
recovery, and how these veils are largely protective mechanisms
that people who stutter
use to (unconsciously) cope with the disorder, just as all humans use
similar "veils" to
cope with other disturbing or discordant aspects of their lives.
In the course of this
exploration,
the site will address some of the
reasons why stuttering seems so mysterious, and try to show
how a lot of this mystery can
begin to be resolved by acknowledging the experience of people who stutter: specifically,
the feeling that stuttering involves an intermittent, uncontrollable, inhibition
or disruption of speech. And we will address the dual
nature of stuttering: how stuttering may develop from often
occasional and mild, genetically-based motor breakdowns into a
traumatic neuro-psychological insult that can be managed and/or
extinguished but not cured.
The site also contains many news and resource items that may
be of interest to people seeking information about stuttering,
including reviews of films and books that discuss or portray stuttering, announcements and news articles, basic information about
stuttering and stuttering therapy, and resources for students.
